Digital India: Highway for Good Governance & Economic Growth

9th January, 2016 @ 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM

The government of India has embarked on an ambitious Digital India programme with the vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Rightly so, as, in the increasingly digitally-focused world, there is unprecedented political, business and social opportunity.

Economies and industries are becoming increasingly reliant on the internet, raising questions about how technological resilience can be strengthened without impeding innovation. The internet offers remarkable possibilities to promote social benefits through a thriving, open and secure digital economy, and possibly first time allows financial inclusion.

About 3.17 billion, i.e. almost 44 % of the 7.2 billion people on the Earth are connected to each other through the Internet. In India, the penetration is still about 30%, for obvious reasons such as lack of connectivity and absence of Indic language applications. Digital India can address some of these gaps. A key goal is to make Internet access affordable, and to connect 2,50,000 villages through optical fibre cables.

This government’s one of the important initiatives is the project for Technology Development for Indian languages (TDIL), driven by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), and implemented in all departments across states. This project aims to provide all government services in all 22 languages under the Eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution for wider reach and accessibility for citizens in local languages. It will also provide a range of technical solutions, browsers and content in local languages, reaching out beyond English speaking elite to include those 800 million Indians who speak Indian languages.

This day-long conference is designed with a clear aim of building capacity and enhancing ability of participants about how various digital platforms/services can be utilised for better governance, on the backdrop of Digital India programme.
