Here are how companies are using big data to treat customers more like individuals — and build better long-term relationships so those customers happily buy more and more.

EBay turns big data into intelligent information

EBay conducts a wide variety of activities such as machine learning, data mining, economics, user behaviour analytics, information retrieval and visualization using big data. And the data they work with is of a wide variety: user, user behaviour, transaction, items, feedback, searches.

GE uses big data to power machine services business

GE, one of the UK’s largest manufacturers, is using big data analytics to predict maintenance needs. GE is a big fan of big data, investing more than $100 million in tech companies this year alone. GE manufactures jet engines, turbines and medical scanners. It is using operational data from sensors on its machinery and engines for pattern analysis.

Amazon predicts exactly what customers want before they ask for it

Amazon long ago mastered the recommendation of books, toys, or kitchen utensils that their customers might be interested in. Other companies have followed suit, such as recommending music on Spotify, movies on Netflix, or Pins on Pinterest. Amazon uses big data also to offer a superb service to its customers. This could be the effect of the purchase of Zapos in 2009, but it clearly helps that it ensures that customer representatives have all the information they need the moment a customer needs support. They can do this because they use all the data they have collected from their customers to build and constantly improve the relationship with its customers. This is something many e-tailers can learn from.

But Amazon is expanding its usage of Big Data since it notices that the competition is nearing closer. As such, Amazon added a remote computing service, via Amazon Web Services (AWS), to their already massive product and service offering.

Catching swine flu: how big data helped doctors to understand a pandemic

In the health care industry, big data is being put to work to improve the quality of patient treatment — and save lives. Health care providers in Singapore have gathered big data insights from analytics platforms to transform how they manage chronic diseases.

The swine flu pandemic was an early example of how mobile phone data can be used to analyse trends and patterns of movement. A specialist team from Telefónica used mobile network data to understand how people moved around during the swine flu pandemic. Their findings helped to validate a government’s response to the crisis.

Delta Airlines identified customer pain points and resolve them using Big Data

Most companies know what some of their customers’ pain points are (if they don’t, they aren’t paying attention to their customers.) Those who are digging deep into the data to solve those difficulties are improving their customers’ experience.

For example, take Delta Airlines. All airlines know a top concern for passengers is lost baggage, particularly when they are on a flight that’s delayed and missed connections involved. Delta Airlines looked further into their data and created a solution that would remove the uncertainty of where a passenger’s bag might be.

Customers can now snap a photo of their baggage tag using the “Track My Bag” feature on the Delta app and then keep tabs on their luggage as it makes its way to the final destination. Even if a bag doesn’t make it on the intended flight, passengers save time tracking it down. Finding a new way to put big data to use for the benefit of their passengers put Delta out front in a competitive market.

Why do Product leaders need to understand “Big Data” science?

One of the benefits of Big Data is the opportunity to explore and discover trends in our same ‘ol data. As Product Managers, we should understand the use case and provide some basic reports and views. But we can’t assume to know everything that the user will want to know or do. Bizosys Technologies’ Tools for Simplifying Software Development

Bizosys Technologies, launched in January 2009 in Bangalore, India, is an award winning, India-based software engineering company that has developed several tools that are available free to use online or as open-source software with downloadable source code. One of the most significant tools is HSearch, a real-time Big Data search engine for Hadoop. In this interview, Sridhar Dhulipala, co-founder and director – solutions, discusses his company’s tools and also shares lessons learned in the software development journey. SandHill.com: What was your vision; what inspired you to launch Bizosys? 

Sridhar Dhulipala: Bizosys was born out of a question and not out of a smart business plan. The question we had was: how can one simplify software development? This translated into an engineering quest where Bizosys founders were consumed in research for the first two years, entirely self-funded, thanks to the low capex model afforded by cloud infrastructure.

The three co-founders at Bizosys met during their careers at Infosys in Bangalore and decided to start Bizosys. Bizosys is self-funded and has had no sustained mentor in a formal sense — but a mentor would surely have helped from a go-to-market perspective.

We now provide IT services for enterprise and SMBs, mostly around Big Data, search and analytics, IT performance engineering, new application development targeting existing on-premises deployments or cloud architecture, addressing existing application technology stacks or emerging NoSQL technologies such as Hadoop.

Our tools are now accessed by users from over 100 countries globally. In the longer run, evangelizing our products and having vibrant user communities is a desirable goal.

SandHill.com: Is there a story behind your company name? 

Sridhar Dhulipala: The idea behind Bizosys is “business operating system.” As our quest was about simplifying software development, the application of this was to develop a business operating system that is easy to build, robust, scalable and especially intended for frequently changing, rapid deploy, long tail of applications. 

SandHill.com: Please describe the tools your company has developed. 

Sridhar Dhulipala: Bizosys has developed several tools that are available free to use online or as open-source software with downloadable source code. 10Screens is an online high-fidelity prototyping and requirements collaboration tool for remote teams. It’s free and has close to 4,000 registered users spanning more than 120 countries. HSearch is our open-source Big Data search engine with real-time capabilities on Hadoop and it has had over 2,200 downloads by users in more than 80 countries. It includes a kids-safe search engine for YouTube videos. 1line is a server-side backend.

SaaS and Silicon Valley are Game-Changers in India

A revolution is taking place in India’s businesses, which is transforming India at large. It began with mobile phones. Although there were telephones in India prior to mobile phones, they never took off in a big way. But mobile phones are so inexpensive and provide such great benefits that now everybody has a phone. The software-as-a-service model is a similar phenomenon in that SaaS fills a void that could not be filled in any other way. SaaS is an inexpensive way for India’s businesses to have good-quality software that makes their businesses much more efficient and effective.

SaaS will be even more of a game-changer in India than it has been in the United States. It’s not just because of the pricing model; it’s also because the time is right. SaaS products are proliferating at the same time as ubiquitous mobile devices and the flood of Big Data are causing companies to look for new business solutions. As businesses embrace SaaS for their critical business functions, they get more velocity in their business, which makes them more competitive in their markets.

Local products — made by local Indian software companies that understand the local business needs — are a key factor in the growing use of SaaS solutions. Improvement of Internet services in India has also contributed to SaaS adoption. A third factor is the fear that not using SaaS solutions will cause a company to be an outlier. This was not the case a couple of years ago. So it’s a tipping point-phenomenon coupled with more availability of local products at a very attractive price point.

A major transition is underway in the technology stack. In the life cycle of the software industry, new solutions typically come from startups and small companies as opposed to large companies. We see this happening again today in India where the small, nimble startups are shifting their business to create SaaS solutions. Even so, some startups are dramatically more successful than others, due in large part to two enablers.
